SITUATION

The objective was to develop a speculative design and implement it for one week within a household, where the users would initially be unaware of the design's purpose. Rather, the design was meant to gradually unfold over the course of the week. The initiative focuses on a problem regarding cancer prevention. The objective is for an individual to utilize the design for a week and contemplate the specific cancer type or its origin. Our team created a project that addresses a concern linked to cancer prevention. Toasting Booth is a design initiative that seeks to raise awareness about the risks associated with tanning.

APPROACH

We started by conducting research and brainstorming ideas regarding various types of cancer and their possible causes. We chose to center our project around skin cancer. Together, we modified a newly acquired toaster to look more like a tanning booth. We achieve this by taking apart the toaster's outer casing, using acrylic for the surface to create a robust block structure while enabling transparency for users to observe the internal workings. The LED strip lights also improve the simulation. Wooden elements were used at the front of the toaster along with an acrylic door for the user to insert the human-shaped bread into the altered toaster.

We performed excellently on the Physical Prototype and the Video Documentary.
